Artist Residency in Jokkmokk, Sweden - Deadline 17 March 2024

International visual artists of any discipline can apply individually or as a duo for the artist residency in Jokkmokk, a city north of the Arctic Circle in Arctic Sweden and Sápmi. Lasting from September 16th to October 5th and ending with a presentation of the artwork, it provides accomodation and a private workspace, a fee of 15.000 SEK or 1342,49 EUR and the participation in a range of tailored activities related to the regional culture.

The residency forms part of the Swedish Lapland AiR programme and is arranged by the Visual Artists Support Centre in Norrbotten, the Jokkmokk municipality and Kultur & Fritid. The partners seek applicants with at least two years of experience working as a professional visual artist, about which they have to provide information in the application process. In addition, they hand in a letter of motivation and a project idea. Following a first selection process in April, three applicants will be invited to an interview to determine the winner of the scholarship.

Over the course of the residency, the artists can express their wishes for the creation of their thematically fitting programme, which includes study visits, meetings and other activities. They can establish contact with local artisans and artists or conduct research in Samic creative and educative centres: Cooperations already exist between the residency organisers and the Ájtte Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum, as well as the Sami Education Center/ Sámij åhpadusguovdásj and Sámi Duodji/ Sami handicraft foundation.
