11th European Festival of the First Novel

The ARS BALTICA accredited project "European Festival of the First Novel" takes place from 23 to 26 May 2013 at Literaturhaus Schleswig-Holstein in Kiel (Germany). Eleven international novelists will meet together to discuss and to publish new novels.

Since 2003, new prose from ten European countries formed the heard of the "European Festival of the First Novel". This year, eleven novelists, their editors and other literarily professionals will discuss writing and publishing and acquaint themselves with new novels.


Authors of 2013 are:

  • Stine Pilgaard (Denmark): Min mor siger
  • Aki Ollikainen (Finland): Nälkävuosi
  • Arezu Weitholz (Germany): Wenn die Nacht am stillsten ist
  • Kjersti Anfinnsen (Norway): Det var grønt
  • Zośka Papużanka (Poland): Szopka
  • Florian Illichmann-Rajchl (Austria): Der weite Weg zum Wasserspender
  • Marlène Tissot (France): Mailles à l'envers
  • Ágnes Szil (Hungary): Tangram
  • Stefano Jorio (Italy): Radiazione
  • Sander Kollaard (Netherlands): Onmiddellijke terugkeer van uw geliefde
  • Jolanda Piniel (Switzerland): Die Verbannte

The authors will read short sequences from the novels in the original language before professional readers Eva Krautwig and Nils Aulike will present excerpts from the German sample translations.


Thursday,  23 May:

  • in the afternoon: visit of the authors and editors at the CAU Kiel
  • 19.00-23.00: Reading gala


Friday, 24 May:

  • 9.30-13.00: Author-Novel-Publisher: Presentations I
  • 19.00: The author as producer and product


Saturday, 25 May:

  • 9.30-13.00: Author-Novel-Publisher: Presentations II
  • 15.00-18.00: The second novel-from the authors’ perspective
  • 15.00-18.00: The second novel-from the publishers’ perspective
  • 20.00: literature live drawn and composed – impro-off-evening


Sunday, 26 May:

  • 10.00-12.30: Résumé, perspectives and play on words
