Culture Night was first started around a decade ago, in the lead up to Vilnius being celebrated as the European Capital of Culture in 2009. Just as lights are dimmed before the screening of a film, theatre or a musical performance, Culture Night flourishes under dim light, to showcase the works at their best, in the spotlight.
From theatres and museums to galleries and churches, more than 150 projects are involved in the event, which is open to all. More than 500 professional artists descend on the city to present their work in parks, town squares and the quaint streets of the old town. Such is the enthusiasm for the event that in 2011, Culture Night was awarded the ‘most successful Lithuanian cultural tourism project’, for its role in promoting local and regional arts and culture, arts education opportunities and of course young and emerging artists themselves.
The programme of events can be found here and all events are free of charge throughout the night. The event usually attracts over 150,000 so plan ahead - information about Vilnius, public transport and logistics for Culture Night can be found here. The Vilnius Culture Night will be held on Friday 15th June from 6pm until 2am on Saturday 17th June 2018.
"Culture includes not only culture and arts, but also the way of life and system of values. In this sense culture becomes the major power for intellectual renewal and human perfection." (European Council Report on European Cultural Policy)
