Dźwieki Północy 2012 - 31. Sounds of the North Festival

27.06.2012 |

This ARS BALTICA accredited Festival takes place from 28 July to 4 August 2012 in Gdansk/ Poland. It is a project of the Baltic Sea Cultural Centre which has for a long time been a part of the cultural calendar of Gdansk and on the folk music map of Poland.

The Sounds of the North is one of the major folk events in Poland (mentioned in the report on the state of Polish music, prepared by the Institute for Music and Dance) and a significant international music scene, particularly in the Baltic Sea (Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Poland and Norway).

In the context of this year’s festival, a gathering of the most interesting artists drawing from folk sources of Poland, Ukraine and Baltic countries will have the opportunity to present their work. By inviting artists to participate in the event the organisation team pays special attention to the search for a new quality, unique stylistic connections – whether with jazz, rock and electronic music.

This year’s struggle of sportsmen - EURO 2012 was also reflected in the art programme of the festival – we invited some Ukrainian artists. In the framework of the event there will be concerts as well as traditional music instrument workshops: violin and accordion, and vocals and dance.

Among the accompanying events you will find: screenings of ethnic and traditional culture, a theatre performance and workshops of art crafts for children and adults.
The Festival is presenting many outstanding artists, the representatives of musical tradition of the Baltic Sea, varied in style and interchangeably defining particular cultural idioms. In fact, renaissance of the contemporary "folk" music is closely connected with the need of finding one's own roots, reviving of the sources and strengthening regional and national individuality. The "Northern" plot of the Festival is rare in this field of events in Poland. This causes the unique atmosphere of the event, which is appreciated by both audience and musicians.
