Once again, the ARS BALTICA accredited festival will offer music culture from the areas of folk, jazz and world music. Not only music should cross borders this time: The Festival 2012 is themed "Deutschmark – Däneland".
With the upcoming edition of the festival folkBALTICA will place a political sign: The provocative title quite obviously evolved out of discussions about the border controls that had have been reintroduced on the German-Danish border, but the idea of looking at borders and border-crossers is also fascinating from an artistic point of view.
The folkBALTICA festival stands for innovative programmes and musical discoveries. So this year magical rune singing of Finnish immigrants in the forests of eastern Norway and projects involving people from immigrant backgrounds living in Germany will be presented.
As a special highlight historical music found in the Copenhagen archives is brought to life on the grand opening concert on 11th May. These treasures include dances from Flensburg and South Schleswig, and will be performed by young musicians from Germany, Sweden, Poland and Lithuania under the baton of Danish master fiddler Harald Haugaard.
folkBALTICA is thus once again making a significant contribution to help Sønderborg and the cross-border region’s bid to be European Capital of Culture 2017.
"Culture includes not only culture and arts, but also the way of life and system of values. In this sense culture becomes the major power for intellectual renewal and human perfection." (European Council Report on European Cultural Policy)
