For the 23rd year running, a ship will depart from Helsinki’s Länsisatama harbour to kick off yet another rowdy and fun weekend of northern European folk music and festivities.
The Folklandia cruise is a unique event that was first launched in 1996. Welcoming over 3000 festival attendees, the programme features 131 local and international artists and musicians, including some of Europe’s most famous as headliners.
Folklandia is known for featuring some of Europe’s greatest folk musicians, keeping the tradition and heritage of their culture’s folk music alive, whilst embracing an experimental approach. This year’s theme is “With all the trimmings – the living heritage of folk music and dance”. The festival is organized by Pispala Schottische and the Finnish Youth Association.
The Folklandia cruise will be held on the M/S Silja Europa, on the Baltic Sea, from Friday 12th January to Saturday 13th January 2018. The boat will depart from Länsisatama harbour at 6.30pm on Friday January 12th and return on Saturday the 14th January at 4pm. Full details are available on the Folklandia website. The programme is available here (in Finnish).
"Culture includes not only culture and arts, but also the way of life and system of values. In this sense culture becomes the major power for intellectual renewal and human perfection." (European Council Report on European Cultural Policy)
