Matters_ Open Call for Sound Artists

15.06.2018 |

Sound artists wanting to explore, discover and add urban and industrial-style sounds to their repertoire are invited to apply for a 2-week residency being held in Kaunas, Lithuania in August. The deadline for applications is midnight on Sunday 24th June 2018.

If you work creatively in some capacity with sound, then you should know about Kaunas 2022's Matters_. This platform for industrial culture has been running, and will continue to run, residencies throughout 2018. The residencies focus on exploration of sounds produced in and by the built environment – from concrete remnants to abandoned industrial sites, railway tracks and stations to decaying ruins.

The concept of sound in urban space is explored and field recordings of objects, structures and the sounds produced moving through and around them are captured. Participants can learn how to find and produce relevant sounds as well as gather an archive of files to utilise in their creative outputs during and after the residency.

Sound artists, experimental musicians, industrial music composers and sound collectors are invited to apply for the residency, which will take place in the city centre in Kaunas from Friday 10th August to Friday 24th August 2018. As part of the residency, participants are asked to contribute a track of 5 to 15 minutes in length that will become part of the Matters_. 2018 compilation album, as well as something that can be publicly shared during the residency.

Applications should be sent in PDF format via email to matters(via) and should include a motivation letter, an outline of your work, and links to your online profiles such as Soundcloud and Facebook. Successful applicants will receive €500 euros for expenses, €200 reimbursed for travel expenses, accommodation, studio space, production and technical support.

More information about Matters_ can be found on their website. You can also get more details about the residency through their Facebook event. Deadline for applications to be submitted is Sunday 24th June 2018 and successful applicants will be announced on social media on Monday 2nd July 2018.
