Nordic Days

05.12.2017 |

The town of Liepāja, Latvia will be the centre of the Nordic region this week as it hosts the Nordic Days, thanks to the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office, in collaboration with a number of embassies and cultural partners hosts. Nordic days starts today and will run for 4 days, closing on Friday.

In its picturesque location in the west of Latvia, Liepāja is the ideal place for the many and varied events of the Nordic Days to be held. There is a busy programme of events planned, ranging from seminars, discussions and public talks to exhibitions, film screenings and musical performances. The topics at the heart of all of the events focus on strengthening the region through more cooperations and more regular engagement between partners to share Nordic culture and practices.

First order of business for the Nordic Days will be a meeting between the various ambassadors - Hans Brask (Denmark), Steinar Egil Hagen (Norway), Olli Kantanen (Finland), Annika Jagander (Sweden), as well as the Director of the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office, Stefan Eriksson, and the Liepāja City Mayor Uldis Sesks and representatives from Liepāja City Council. The meeting is intended to table ideas and discuss opportunities for closer collaboration and engagement within the region. The ambassadors will also visit schools during the Nordic Days and local cultural representatives from their respective countries.

Also on the programme is a round table discussion on the topic of “Possibilities and challenges in Latvian-Nordic business cooperation”. There will be a number of seminars, covering topics such as the Nordic-Baltic mobility programs, the potential for economic links between Liepāja and the Nordic countries, and “Circular economy, zero-waste production and latest trends”.

In addition to the verbal part of the Nordic Days there will be exhibitions on Swedish children’s literature, Nordic contemporary architecture, photography and trends in urban design in the Nordic and Baltic regions. For some creative inspiration, the Great Amber Concert Hall will host a four concert series of contemporary Icelandic music and there will be various performances of Nordic music, including some Christmas cheer throughout the event. There will also be film screenings with Norwegian and Swedish films, features, documentaries and shorts in the programme.

All events in the Nordic Days are free apart from the Icelandic concert series. The programme is available here online.

Nordic Days will be held from Tuesday 7th December to Friday 10th December 2017 in Liepāja, Latvia. The event is organised by the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office in Latvia, the Embassy of Denmark, the Embassy of Finland, the Embassy of Norway, the Embassy of Sweden, and the Danish Cultural Institute in cooperation with Liepāja City Council and other partners.

Further information is available on the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Office website in Latvian and English and on Liepāja’s city website in Latvian, English, Russian and German.
