31.05.2018 |

Artists, art professionals, researchers and students from the Baltic region and Russia are invited to apply for a position at the Sam Rit residency “Are You Cold?”, being held in Sam Rit, northern Thailand this European winter.

Artists looking for a completely different cultural experience and investigation (along with a much needed break from the European winter!) are invited to apply for the 2018-2019 Sam Rit winter residency, running between 1st December 2018 and 29th January 2019.

‘Are You Cold?” has been developed exclusively for applicants from Russia and the Baltic region, by way of creating a cross-cultural collaboration between them and the Thai locals in the small rural village of Sam Rit. The residency aims to facilitate artists' explorations of the differences and similarities between the regions' cultures – from language and customs to weather and lifestyle and of course food – as well as discussion of crucial topics such as sex tourism, immigration, and globalisation.

The residency programme has a strong focus on community, and was developed out of previous work and connection between the regions. The project is focused on the discussion, development, and strengthening of the existing relationship and the breaking down of generalisations and stereotypes. Residents get the opportunity to become immersed in the local culture and lifestyle and to work on specific projects in an environment dedicated to their creative process, and can expect collaboration and exchange with the local community. Artists of all mediums and from all backgrounds are invited to apply, as well as arts managers and arts workers, academics of all disciplines, researchers, and students.

The current residency will run for 60 days, between the 1st of December 2018 and 29th of January 2019. Fees are $2300 USD and include accommodation in a single en-suite air-conditioned room, with hot showers, linen, and basic supplies for the duration of the stay. The fee also includes orientation, 2 meals a day, transport and access to an interpreter. Residents are warmly welcomed by the Thai people and as well as being open minded and prepared to work alongside others, should also be prepared for a life changing experience living and creating in such a unique environment.

The call for applications for the winter 2018-19 residency at Sam Rit is open now and all applications should be received by midnight on Saturday 30th June 2018. The residency period runs from Saturday 1st December 2018 until Tuesday 29th January. More information about the winter residency as well as the application form can be found on the Sam Rit website here
