WE JAZZ Festival

06.12.2017 |

As the darkness of winter sets in and everyone’s attention turns towards preparing for end of year festivities, We Jazz saunters into Helsinki! This annual jazz festival kicked off last weekend and runs all week until Sunday 10th December.

More than a dozen of Helsinki’s coolest spots will be filled with warmth, cool cats and great tunes as the city takes a look back on the best of jazz in 2017, from across the region and beyond. Timeless classics and new releases, covers and originals all sit side by side in the programme, all performed by some of Europe’s most talented jazz professionals.

We Jazz was launched in 2013 and every year tries to extend on the programme of the previous festival. A diverse range of jazz genres and styles is presented. The programme curation aims to reflect the quality of individual works as well as their contribution to the atmosphere of the festival as a whole.

Venues chosen this year include the beautiful concert hall of Aleksanterin teatteri, Lapinlahden Lähde - the former mental hospital, the old cinema at the Andorra Film Theatre and Helsinki’s own version of (Berlin’s revered nightclub) Berghain – Ääniwalli. There are also performances in cafes, art galleries and hotels, with all spaces chosen for their atmosphere and intimacy – essential ingredients for any good jazz gig.

Helsinki’s largest annual jazz festival, We Jazz has earned a respected reputation for its unconventional approach and commitment to new and emerging artists. There are almost 20 events across the 1 week festival, with some free entry and others ticketed. See the programme online for more details. The closing concert will be on Sunday 10th December at Korjaamo/Kulmasali, featuring Timo Lassy and Teppo Mäkynen with Anni Elif. Doors open at 6pm and tickets can be purchased here.

WE JAZZ Festival opened on Sunday 3rd December and will close on Sunday 10th December (with a special bonus gig on Monday 11th). We Jazz will be held at different venues in Helsinki, Finland. You can read more about the festival on the We Jazz website.
