‘Kremerata Baltica’ Festival, 26 June - 1 July 2008 :: Latvia
(2008 06 25 11:48)
Gidon Kremer is one of the world’s leading violinists who has appeared n virtually every major concert stage with the most celebrated orchestras of Europe and America. His repertoire is unusually extensive - all of the standard classical and romantic violin works, as well as music by twentieth century masters such as Henze, Berg and Stockhausen.
In 1997 he founded the Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra in order to foster outstanding young musicians from the three Baltic States. The orchestra consists of 27 young Baltic musicians – the average age of the members is 27. They have performed in the world’s greatest halls and at major festivals. They were awarded a Grammy Award in 2002 in the category Classical Music: Best Small Ensemble Recording for its recording "After Mozart" (Nonesuch). They were nominated again in 2003 for their recording of works by Enescu.
The first ‘Kremerata Baltica’ Festival took place in 2004 transferring the chamber music festival tradition from Lockenhaus, Austria to Kremer’s birthplace – Latvia. This year the festival opens on 26 June at 7 p.m. with a chamber music concert in Sigulda Evangelical Lutheran Church while the closing concert will take place on 30 June in Riga Dome Church and July 1 in Liepaja.
