2007 The Year of Astrid Lindgren
(2007 03 30 13:49)
This year not only Sweden, the homeland of Astrid Lindgren, but the whole world celebrates the 100th anniversary of her birth.
Astrid Lindgren is known world-wide as an icon of children literature whose books were translated into 85 languages and published in more than 100 countries. She is also famous for the support of children's and animal rights, and for her opposition to corporal punishment. In 1993 when she was prised with the Right Livelihood Award (also known as the Alternative Nobel Prize) the organisers justified the choice stating that it was due to her commitment to justice, non-violence and understanding of minorities as well as her love and caring for nature.
The importance of Lindgren’s work was also approved by the UNESCO’s decision of placing the collection of writer’s original manuscripts (The Royal Library, Stockholm) on its World Heritage List in 2005.
During the whole 2007 seminars, conferences, exhibitions, new book releases and many other events will be organised to praise the memory of Lindgren.
The climax of the celebrations will be in November 2007.
All the organisers of Lindgren’s celebrations are asked to send the info about their plans to the Lindgren’s jubilee website.
