The exhibition History will repeat itself at Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle (CSW) concentrates on re-enactment strategies in contemporary visual arts and performance, as presented by the works of 23 artists (see below). The term “re-enactment” means recreating events that had a high impact on history and society in front of an audience, which either remains passive or participates in the action.
Reconstructions have gained popularity in recent years due to the fascinating possibility for viewers to participate in meaningful events. Yet unlike historical dramatizations, artistic re-enactments do not focus on the past, but recreate traumatic scenes important for the present. They are a reinterpretation of the presentation of these scenes by the mass media, replacing images with direct and often physical experience.
The exhibition is possible due to cooperation between Hartware MedienKunstVerein in Dortmund and the KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, where it was first presented in 2007.
