TOWER KRONPRINZ: SECOND ADVENT - Competition Results

The international competition TOWER KRONPRINZ: SECOND ADVENT is aimed at promoting among local population and professional artistic community the future residence of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts in Kaliningrad - a cultural and historical monument of the mid 19th century, fortress tower-redan «KRONPRINZ».
Today Kronprinz barracks is the monument of the military and engineering architecture, an object of cultural and historical heritage of federal importance protected by the state. In 2003 a part of the defensive barracks – tower-redan Kronprinz – was placed at the disposal of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts in order to establish a museum, exhibition, research and information centre for contemporary culture in Kaliningrad.
The First and Second International competitions TOWER KRONPRINZ: SECOND ADVENT took place in the years 2005/2006 and 2006/2007. In 2008 the organisers received 55 applications from Austria, Belgium, Great Britain, Germany, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Serbia, Finland, France, Sweden, Estonia and RSA. The jury included: Leonid Bazhanov – art critic, curator, art director of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts (Moscow); Sergey Khachaturov – art critic, observer of the section “Culture” in the periodical “Vremya novostey” (Moscow); Yevgeny Umansky – curator, artist, art director of KB NCCA.
The jury had chosen the following projects to be implemented in 2008 on the grants form the Ford Foundation, Moscow:
– “Kronprinz: Kaleidoscope” by Oleg Blyablyas (Kaliningrad, Russia);
– “Kaliningrad Defensive Barracks Choir” by Paolo Jirol (Venice, Italy)
– “Swindle” by “Recycle” group (Andrey Blokhin, Georgiy Kiznetsov) (Krasnodar, Russia)
“Swindle” and “Kaleidoscope – Kronprinz” projects will be presented to the audience on the night of 16-17 May, 2008, on the territory of Tower Kronprinz in the framework of the European Museum Night. Paolo Jirol’s “Kaliningrad Defensive Barracks Choir” project presentation will take place in summer 2008 (exact dates will be confirmed later).
