Exhibition on Arvo Pärt’s Music and Life :: till 30 May 2008, Copenhagen
(2008 05 05 15:30)
The Estonian Ambassador to Denmark Meelike Palli opened the exhibition in the Nordic Council of Ministers’ Gallery on 29 April at 15.00. The exhibition takes place to honour Arvo Pärt who is going to receive Léonie Sonning Music Prize at a concert with the DR Danish National Symphony Orchestra and the DR Danish National Choir on 22 May.
The Estonian composer is described both as famous and unknown. Musical experts are well acquainted with his works while he is not that known among the general public. He was born in 1935 and educated at the Academy of Music in Tallinn. He was inspired by western modernistic music in the 1960s. Beauty and simplicity characterising his own style can be heard in works such as Fratres, Summa and Tabula Rasa (all 1977).
During his last visit to Denmark his Lamentate (2002) for piano and orchestra was performed by the DR Danish National Symphony Orchestra. It is visible that in the last years the classical symphony orchestra began to play a greater role in his music. The exhibition is open until 30 May. It is organised in partnership with the Estonian Embassy to Denamark and the Nordic Region in Focus.
