International Plein-Air, 15 – 25, September 2008, Daugavpils, Latvia
(2008 09 18 11:48)Mark Rothko, an internationally acclaimed and world-famous artist, was born in Daugavpils 105 years ago. To celebrate this important anniversary Daugavpils City Culture Administration in cooperation with Daugavpils University, Daugavpils Art School "The Sun School", Daugavpils Museum of History and Art and the Union of Artists of Daugavpils
Region is organising the Plein-Air with participants representing seven countries: Ukraine, Belarus, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Russia and Latvia.
The program of the event includes Aivars Broks' piano concert "Untitled" inspired by Rothko's paintings and screening of Michael Johnson's film "Rothko in Daugavpils"on the opening night on September 15. On the same day local and national Latvian authorities and international experts will gather at Daugavpils Culture Administration premises to participate in Mark Rothko's Art Centre planning committee debates.
The artists's individual presentations will start on September 16.
Other events include the Plein-Air at the Daugavpils University Arts Department and Daugavpils Art School "The Sun School" with lectures and film evenings (September 17-24); Open Doors Day on September 20 for all the visitors willing to see artistic results of the Plein-Air; lectures of Professor Eduards Kļaviņš (Latvian Art Academy) and Professor Tatiana Yurieva (St Petersburg University, Russia) on September 24.
On September 25 all the works created during the Plein-Air will be given to the prospective Mark Rothko's Art Centre. The event will finish with a concert of Liepāja Symphonic Orchestra at Daugavpils Latvian Culture Center.
