Cairoscape, 26 August – 12 October 2008 :: Berlin
(2008 09 28 22:19)The event 'Cairoscape - Images, Imagination and Imaginary of a Contemporary Mega City' presents contemporary art and culture from Egypt to Berlin audiences. The aim of the project is to introduce a dynamic Arab-African magalopolis – Cairo - and use it as a starting point of a bigger presentation of the modern city and contemporary urbanization in general. Cairo is a symbolic place generating new narratives that go beyond the local context. It is the city that both influences and is infuenced with various cultural ideas from the region. It is the city which for ages has been producing important works of literature, music and, quite recently, cinema.
18 artists taking part in the project reflect certain images of the contemporary and existential urban condition in their works. And those images are related to Cairo's power and imagination. All those images can differ, as the project involves artists of Egyptian origin, as well as the artists who lived at some point in Egypt. The works are based on facts and fiction, reality and imagination. 'Cairoscope' shows possibilities and paradoxes of Cairo, the city of arts and culture, ovewhelming heat and pollution.
