The ISCM World Music Days/ 18th Gaida Festival is organised by the Lithuanian Composers' Union, the Vilnius' Festivals and the Lithuanian Section of the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM) in Vilnius, It is the first ISCM World Music Days in this part of Europe and the first such a big international contemporary music festival in the Baltic Region.
Composers from all over the world have written music for this occasion. The theme of the festival is "InBetween" and aims at looking at contemporary music as a transit zone and middle ground Therefore the works performed during the festival were selected by an international jury to complay with this theme. Two focus composers: Jonathan Harvey from Great Britain and Peter Eötvös from Hungary are members of the jury and also main guests of the festival with their premiere compositions.
The theme of the festival is supposed to indicate on a big number of forms contemporary music can take nowadays in the wider cultural landscape and in how many ways this music can reach audiences (especially young audience with rich musical experiences) . It also shows that contemporary music should not be limited to concert halls but share the audience with other aristic forms of expression. Therefore the festival explores differents forms of music with international performers, in various concert, theatre and art venues in Vilnius.
