ArtVenture Freedom to Create Prize
(2008 07 02 13:14)
The Prize was launched by ArtVenture and ARTICLE 19. Its aim is to award artists whose works promote human rights, free expression, empathy, equality and understanding. It consists of three categories.
The prize of US$ 50,000 will be open to individuals or artistic groups in all creative fields including the visual and performance arts, music, crafts, design and literature. ArtVenture Freedom to Create Youth Prize (US$ 25,000 scholarship and advocacy prize) will be open to artists who are under the age of 18 while the ArtVenture Freedom to Create Imprisoned Artist Prize, will focus on artists who are currently imprisoned for their artwork. US$ 25,000 will serve to support their family, pay legal costs and support advocacy efforts.
The organisers want to remind that not all governments provide citizens with the ‘freedom to create’ needed to foster innovation, commerce and prosperity. Some of them harass and impoverish their citizens, steal resources, stifle entrepreneurship and undermine human ingenuity and hope. The Prize aims to recognise those who show that art can play an important role in giving a voice to those who are denied opportunity and resources.
The deadline for entry is 31 October 2008
