“Bauhaus Twenty – 21. An Ongoing Legacy”, 8 May – 5 July 2009, Cracow, Poland
(2009 05 06 20:32)
The International Cultural Centre Gallery in Cracow invites to the exhibition of the photographs by Gordon Watkinson, presenting twelve salient examples of the Bauhaus architecture built before 1933 and juxtaposed with contemporary projects created according to the Bauhaus ideas and formal language in architecture and design.
In 1919 Walter Gropius wrote in his manifesto: ‘The ultimate aim of all creative activity is architecture (…) Let us desire, conceive and create the new building of the future together. It will combine architecture, sculpture, and painting in a single form, and will one day rise towards the heavens from the hands of a million workers as the crystalline symbol of a new and coming faith.’ And that's how the Bauhaus aesthetics was created and brought together the most outstanding architects and designers of the 20th century.
The exhibition at the International Cultural Centre shows that heritage and ideas of the school are still a vital source of inspiration. The spectators will have a chance to admire such well-known buildings as The Bauhaus School, Dessau-Törten Housing Estate, The Villa Tugendhat, The German Pavilion at the 1929 Barcelona International Exhibition. Architectural drawings and succinct theoretical texts will also be exhibited together with a presentation of projects and photographs of celebrated architects: Sauerbruch Hutton, Werner Sobek and Wingårdhs.
