City of Gdańsk was awarded the UBC (Union of the Baltic Cities) Cultural Award 2009 for the project "The City Signs of Culture". The author of the winning project is Szymon Wróblewski connected with Gdansk Archipelago of Culture.
This year's edition the competition was organised under the title “Creative Use of Information Technology 2009”. The project had been chosen from among 8 applications. In their choice justification the international jury stated that Gdansk project had an interesting idea of creating a data base of all Gdansk street-art projects, which would be open for general use, and use of IT technology in cultural-artistic projects. Also a big adventage of the project is its adaptability in other Baltic cities.
The aim of the project “The City Signs of Culture” is to democratise urban space through art and culture initiatives. Artists invited to participate in the project create imaginative elements and put them into urban areas close at hand for the inhabitants of the city. Exhibited works are related to the history of the chosen place or its specific character. These elements make the city organism more attractive and serve as urban identification spots, places where the signs of culture appear more recognisable among citizens and tourists.
The “City Signs of Culture” project makes artistic actions accessible to an audience by referring to the place where they were created. The “City Signs of Culture” are permanently connected with their venues. The project started at the end of 2008.
