For her first solo show in Berlin, French artist Elise Florenty (*1978, lives and works in Berlin and Paris) will present an installation connected by spatial elements to the video animation Kino Krov (2005) inspired by the publication The Man with a Shattered World (Moscow 1971) by Russian neuropsychologist Alexander Lurija. In the book, Lurija describes the life and medical history of a patient who lost part of his memory. The departure point of Kino Krov is Lurija’s medical report, which the artist transforms into a kind of interior monologue by using text and image fragments. The patient’s disturbed communication and his perception of the human and spatial environment become a metaphor for a particular condition of modern life.
Central to Florenty’s installation is the letter “K”, which appears in various forms in the video and the installative elements within the space. “K” is a recurring letter in the medical report, it is the letter that the patient is unable to memorize and can only connect to words under great strain. It is also a symbol of alienation in Kafka’s novel.
With the project room uqbar the cultural producers Bienert, Drechsel, Sorbello and Weitzel have opted for a continuous presence in Berlin’s exhibition landscape. The project room evolved from the not-for-profit art association uqbar e.V. – Society for Representation Research, which was founded in 2004 as a platform for interdisciplinary projects and international cooperation. uqbar is a multifunctional space for exhibitions, meetings, presentations, seminars, conferences, screenings, and workshops that feature international and Berlin-based artists.
The name uqbar was taken from a novel by the writer Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986). In Borges’ novel the word “Uqbar” is an entry in a fictitious encyclopedia. The word is a construct, a letter combination without meaning, used by the author to exemplify how knowledge and meaning are created. uqbar promotes contemporary art and culture by implementing, hosting, and supporting projects dedicated to the research and promotion of experimental, interdisciplinary artistic and cultural practices in an international context.
