(2007 08 22 13:18)Opening: Friday, August 24, 2007, 7 p.m
Duration: August 24 – September 15, 2007
Artist talk: Monday, August 27, 2007, 8 p.m.
From June until October 2007 uqbar, in cooperation with the 4th Ars Baltica Triennial of Photographic Art Don’t Worry – Be Curious!, is presenting 4 artists from the countries bordering the Baltic Sea whose work addresses problems and fears resulting from upheavals in present-day society.
This time uqbar is presenting the first solo exhibition of Julita Wójcik (born in 1971 in Gdansk, lives in Gdansk) in Berlin. The point of departure for Julita Wójcik’s actions is a common activity or unspectacular place, whose social coding she questions with irony. She frequently deals with gender-specific clichés in (the Polish) society by performing the role of a housewife and publicly peeling potatoes, working in the garden, or doing handicrafts.
The exhibition Making Things More Beautiful playfully addresses the image of the female (and the female artist) who beautifies the home with care and love, thus – on a small scale – making the world a better place. The works on the exhibition include the video View Maker (2004) and the object titled Someone’s Heimat (2006). Julita Wójcik’s artistic interventions comment on role models and conceptions of value by bringing the marginalized to the fore and – in the wink of an eye – revealing moments of local happiness and provincial beauty
On Monday, August 27 at 8 p.m., Julita Wójcik will give a talk and present her works and actions, referring to the sociopolitical transformations in Poland and the female image in Polish society.
