The 5th folkBALTICA, ended with Danish fiddle star Harald Haugaard and harp-player Tom Daun from Solingen leading over 30 musicians from Denmark, Germany, Sweden and Finland in a spectacular festival finale in Flensburg’s packed Marienkirche.
Over the 5 days between 22nd and 26th April 2009, a total of 5000 visitors to 41 events at 31 different venues across the German-Danish region of Sønderjylland-Schleswig were able to see that modern cross-border folk music is one of the most exciting and creative music genres today.
“Especially the groups from Denmark, this year’s focus nation, have shown that they are totally world class” concluded an artistic director Jens-Peter Müller. When the Flensburger Tageblatt wrote "they combine passion with precision" in its report on the outstanding Trio Mio concert on the main stage at the Duborg Skolen, they could really have been describing all the Danish groups that performed at the festival.
Around 100 musicians from seven nations presented the wide variety of musical culture from the Baltic region.
Musicians from the innovative Danish folk scene alone numbered 38.
