Two instrumental highlights and three “Artists in Residence” promise an exceptionally diverse programme at JazzBaltica 2007, which runs from 27 June until 1 July with concerts in Husum, Kiel, Lübeck and Salzau. Under the motto “trumpet vibes” vibraphonists Bobby Hutcherson and Joe Locke /photo/, and trumpeter Dave Douglas will be giving the audience some good vibes at Salzau Castle.
At JazzBaltica 2007 Dave Douglas /photo/ will be demonstrating his diverse range of expression. Accompanied by pianist and arranger Uri Caine, Douglas will be appearing with his quintet, in a special JazzBaltica project and in a further concert in Salzau. Bobby Hutcherson will be at the centre of a Homage to Milt Jackson, meeting up with Joe Locke, the third “Artist in Residence”. Joe Locke will also be playing in many more surprising constellations. In addition, Bobby Hutcherson will be seeking artistic encounters with musicians from Germany and Scandinavia.
“The idea of residency has always been an integral part of the JazzBaltica philosophy. This year three ‘Artists in Residence’ will enable JazzBaltica to bring artists together in a special way, in unique projects and unusual encounters. 2007 will see three wonderful jazz musicians, Dave Douglas, Bobby Hutcherson /photo/ and Joe Locke, coming to Salzau in order to realise precisely this idea,” says Rainer Haarmann, Artistic Director of JazzBaltica. “Ever since Louis Armstrong, the trumpet has been at the very soul of jazz. But for me, the vibraphone has always been a central instrument as well – particularly since the great concerts given by Milt Jackson at JazzBaltica in 1997 and 1999,” says Haarmann, explaining the choice of motto. The complete programme is available from 20 April. Advance ticket sales start on 2 May (telephone: 0049-431-570 470).
