JazzBaltica 2008, 2 to 6 July 2008, Husum, Luebeck, Kiel, Salzau
(2008 02 07 13:33)
The focus point of JazzBaltica 2008 will lay on one of the most important instruments of jazz music: the saxophone. The motto for this year's jazz-festival will be “on sax”. There will be concerts in Husum, Luebeck, Kiel (opening session) and, of course, Salzau castle. “Artist in Residence” 2008 will be Joe Lovano, the famous US-American tenor-sax player. On all three concert-days in Salzau, he will perform with different musicians.
“For this years’ focus point, Joe Lovano is the perfect “Artist in Residence”, said Rainer Haarman, Artistic Director of JazzBaltica. “He will influence JazzBaltica 2008 in his own way and we are really looking forward to all the different projects and concerts with him and other jazz greats from US or from Europe to present the sax in all its different facets.”
Joe Lovane – recently nominated for a Grammy for his new CD with Hank Jones “Kids: Live At Dizzy´s Club Coca Cola“ (Blue Note/EMI) – is one of the most important tenor-sax players of our time. Always open-minded and with lots of energy, he has already played with musicians such as Gunther Schuller, Herbie Hancock, Charlie Haden, Carla Bley, Bobby Hutcherson, Dave Brubeck, Billy Higgins, Dave Holland, Ed Blackwell, Michel Petrucciani, Lee Konitz, Abbey Lincoln, McCoy Tyner, Jim Hall or Bob Brookmeyer.
In addition, JazzBaltica 2008 will celebrate the 90th birthday of Hank Jones and the 70th birthday of Steve Kuhn. JazzBaltica will initiate the birthday festivities for Hank Jones.
Beyond the focus on the saxophone, the great European-African SongNight promises to be a breathtaking music experience: The Kiel high-flyer Milla Kay and the ethno-soul sensation Asa from Nigeria will bring a velvety timbre and an abundance of soul spirit to JazzBaltica.
