Rauma Biennale Balticum 2008 Flower Power
(2008 04 02 15:01)Rauma Biennale Balticum presents exhibitions of contemporary art from countries around the Baltic Sea. The history of the biennial began already in 1977 with a Finnish-Swedish exhibition and from the year 1985 the exhibition has included all the countries around the Baltic Sea: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Sweden. The period of since the biennial exists can be characterized by great political and ideological and artistic changes in the region. Along the different themes of the biennial (Survival, Basic elements, Talking to me? Wake up!) artworks have been reflecting topical issues from politics to basics of human life.
The theme of the year 2008 Rauma Biennale Balticum is based on the sixties slogan "flower power". The focus is on the different paths that the revolutionary thoughts of those days were taking and the possible present and future consequences of connecting flower and power. Flower power can be seen as a symbol of creative energy generating political, social and cultural processes, often through grassroot movements.
The theme is also about the life force and life supporting function of the vegetal world: flowers, plants and trees and the human dependence on nature and peaceful co-existence with the whole biosphere All of this is seen through the rich aesthetic and symbolic dimensions of plants. 2008 Rauma Biennale Balticum presents a variety of artistic media including painting, photography, video, experimental films, printmaking, animation, sculpture, installation, environmental and site-specific works, performances etc.
