8th Baltic Biennale of Contemporary Art, 15 May – 12 July 2009, Szczecin, Poland
(2009 05 30 11:12)
The 8th Baltic Biennale of Contemporary Art titled “Windows upon Oceans” is exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, a branch of the National Museum in Szczecin. The exhibition presents works by 37 European artists from Poland, Finland, Austria, Moldova, Serbia, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Latvia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Czech Republic, Georgia, Romania, Cyprus, Malta, Italy and Belgium, working in various media: painting, spatial, video and audio installations. The project is curated by Magdalena Lewoc and Marlena Chybowska-Butler.
The theme of this year's edition is devoted to Europe as a political, ideological and intellectual project. The international character of the event has been extended thanks to a bigger number of artists and strict cooperation with other projects taking place in four Szczecin partner cities (Strasbourg, Thessaloniki, Liege and Nicosia) under the same title and at the same time.
The first edition of Szczecin Biennale took place in 1995 and since then has developed into one of the most important cyclical events presenting contemporary art in the Baltic Region.
The project is co-financed by the European Commission through the Program of Culture 2000 and implemented in cooperation with partners from France, Belgium, Greece and Cyprus.
