The European Union celebrates 50 years ! Happy Birthday!
(2007 03 14 00:16)
The signing of the Treaty of Rome on 25 March 1957 was a landmark in the history of Europe. The six founding countries were Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The first intention was the union of steel and coal, with a business-orientated goal. Today with 27 EU members, the European Union, while diverse in culture, language and traditions, is based on and united through the common values of freedom, democracy, the rule of law, respect for human rights, and solidarity.
Thank to the celebrities of the 50th anniversary the citizens and governments in the EU's partner countries will have the opportunity to consider what this milestone means for them, what the EU has done for their country and what the prospects are for the future.
Special happenings are planned throughout 2007, with a focus on March 2007 and the traditional Europe Day celebrations around 9 May. Events will include festivals, cinema, conferences and seminars, cultural events, exhibition, publication, concerts and contests.
