Eurocities - Conference and AGM , 21 - 24 November 2007, Gdansk
(2007 11 20 09:22)
Nowadays cities facing demographic change have to address the resulting challenges: not only a change in the population structure but also its impact on the city economy, social cohesion or urban planning.
The idea behind this year’s EUROCITIES Conference and AGM was that it should reflect the current activities of EUROCITIES and involve the EUROCITIES Thematic Forums and Working Groups in defining the scope and content of the conference. Therefore one of the strands of the EUROCITIES Work Programme 2007 was chosen as the theme for the conference - „Demographic Change & Inclusion”. For the annual EUROCITIES Awards, this strand should be seen through the focus of human solidarity and its different manifestations in various spheres of contemporary urban life.
Moreover, as this is the first time EUROCITIES conference has been organized in a new EU member state, representing Central and Eastern Europe, another objective is to highlight the identity and heritage of the conference host city - Gdansk, hence the reference to solidarity in the conference's title: "Solidarity in action: creating cohesive cities" . 27 years ago in Gdansk, shipyard workers acting together decided to put their solidarity into action and fight for freedom and basic human rights - their determination and courage inspired other nations from this part of Europe in their struggle for independence.
