The European Agenda for Culture was sanctioned by the Culture Ministers of the EU Member States last November on the basis of the Communication presented by the Commission.
This first-ever Agenda for Culture in Europe opens up the new way in which Member States, European institutions and cultural stakeholders will act together in response to some of the major challenges that the cultural sector has to deal with.
The three major objectives of this new policy strategy are the following: promotion of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue; promotion of culture as catalyst for creativity in the framework of the Lisbon Strategy; and promotion of culture as a vital element in EU external relations.
To meet these goals a more structured system of cooperation among the Member States and the EU institutions has been introduced: the 'open method of coordination' (OMC), which will be presented and discussed during the meeting.
