European Book Prize 2009
(2009 12 11 21:54)

In 2007 the award went to the former Belgian prime minister, Guy Verhofstadt, for "The United States of Europe." In 2008, Tony Judt won it for his "Post-war."
This year Mariusz Szczygieł’s "Gottland" received the prize in the proze category. A book by French MEP Sylvie Goulard (ALDE) entitled ‘L’Europe pour les Nuls’ (‘Europe for dummies’) was chosen the best essay.
"Gottland" was nominated for the competition by the French critics. The translator of the French edition is Margot Carlier, and the publisher of the book is Actes Sud.
‘L’Europe pour les Nuls’ was published by Editions First in March 2007. It tries to explain the work of the EU institutions in a clear, accessible and sometimes funny way. It is not aimed at specialists, but at Europeans who are curious to know how the institutions work.
The competition’s patron was Jacques Delors, former head of the European Commission. The best of several dozen European books were chosen by a jury made up of journalists and critics of leading European newspapers. The organizers’ premise is that the European Book Award is to honor a publication that promotes the values and vision of Europe.
