Spanish EU Presidency: Culture is on the agenda
(2010 01 28 13:12)This month, the Spanish Minister of Culture, Ángeles González-Sinde, presented the main lines of cultural policy during the Spanish EU Presidency at the meeting of the Commission on Culture of the European Parliament. The three priority areas are:
- to increase the cultural potential with the main focus set on local and regional development,
- to consolidate culture as a factor for economic growth and social cohesion,
- to force the future of digital culture.
Ángeles González-Sinde emphasised that “in Europe, as much attention should be paid to culture as to other already more developed areas”. The aim of the cultural policy in the course of the six months of Spanish Presidency is to reaffirm the European cultural identity. Besides, civic responsibility shall be reinforced by setting culture on the European agenda. During the new Presidency importance shall be attached to the safeguard of cultural diversity as well as to the European Heritage Label which mainly aims on promoting the European Identity.
In her speech, Ángeles González-Sinde also underlined the role of culture and creative industries in creating employment. It is one of the intentions of the Spanish Presidency to strengthen culture as an important factor for economic growth and social cohesion.
Concerning the future of digital culture, Ángeles González-Sinde stressed the possibilities of promoting cultural contents on the internet as well as of applying digital technologies to European cultural services. Another challenge in the field of digital culture is the integration of digital technologies on the dissemination and screening of films.
On April 12th and 13th, the Spanish Ministry of Culture organises a seminar on “Digitalization of cultural material. Digital libraries and copyright”. The seminar will take place in Madrid.
