Survey on Stavanger 2008
(2008 04 29 16:10)
In Autumn 2007 International Research Institute in Stavanger (IRIS) and the University of Stavanger conducted a survey on Stavanger 2008. It was part of a comprehensive research project into the population’s participation in the Capital of Culture Year and their opinions about it. The aim of the project is to check if the inhabitants are activated by the Capital of Culture Year and if they become more interested in cultural life. A post-survey will take place in 2009.
The results of 2007 survey were presented on 21 April. It turns out that a great majority of Rogaland’s inhabitants supports the idea of making Stavanger a European Capital of Culture. They have great expectations concerning the effects of the Capital of Culture Year. A high proportion of the population was aware earlier that Stavanger was going to become Capital of Culture in 2008. Most of them expected the Capital of Culture Year to influence cultural life in the region, strengthen it and offer “important new impulses”.
35 per cent of respondents from North Jæren and 14 per cent from the rest of Rogaland County claimed that Stavanger’s region’s year as Capital of Culture matters to them to a large or fairly large degree. 25 per cent and 13 per cent respectively answered that it didn’t matter to them at all.
