Jože Plečnik Exhibition, 14 May – 20 August 2008, Brussels
(2008 05 19 22:26)
The 'Plečnik Project' is a part of the cultural promotion programme during Slovenia's EU Council Presidency. The exhibition was opened in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts at rue du Musée 9 in Brussels by Dr Vasko Simoniti – the Slovenian Minister of Culture.
Jože Plečnik (1872-1957) was a Slovenian architect, town planner and designer. His works can be seen between Vienna, Prague and Ljubljana. He was one of the main opponents of functionalism maintaining a dialogue with the Greco-Roman heritage. He was a master in using historical, regional and provincial elements to shape original integral pieces. Plečnik was also the founder of the 'Slovenian school' of architecture and his works are visible in the architectural and urban face of the Slovenian capital, Ljubljana. He was only rediscovered in 1986 when he won international recognition posthumously during the great retrospective exhibition at the Centre G. Pompidou in Paris.
Now the National Gallery of Ljubljana in cooperation with the architect of Slovenian origin Boris Podrecca organised an exhibition on Plečnik's work. His masterpieces include street furniture and objects of applied art, from chairs and lamps to goblets and typefaces. The architect’s achievements will be presented in the exhibition through original sketches, models, film presentations and records.
