(2008 06 04 15:41)
The European Commission has noticed that local authorities play an important role in improving the environment. It has thus conceived the European Green Capital Award in order to promote and reward their efforts and commitment to resolve environmental problems.
The main aim of the initiative is to improve the European urban living environment and the environment as a whole. Cities are going to become role models for each other. Since 2010 each year one European city will be chosen the European Green Capital of the year.
The conditions that such a city has to fulfill are as follows:
• It has a consistent record of achieving high environmental standards;
• It is committed to ongoing and ambitious goals for further environmental improvement and sustainable development;
• It can act as a role model to inspire other cities and promote best practices to all other European cities.
Stavros Dimas, EU Commissioner for the Environment said: "I trust that this award will help us turn our urban centres into prosperous places to live and work."
In order to apply to become the European Green Capital the city has to fill in the online application form by 1 October 2008.
