JazzBaltica

For over 20 years now, JazzBaltica (Germany) has been representing a melting pot of known Jazz musicians and creative newcomers from all over the world. Thereby, the festival of Baltic Jazz has achieved to set standards for the international Jazz scene.

  • What is the project about?
Being a part of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival since 2002, the artistic director Rainer Haarmann originally created the programme of JazzBaltica as an opening session for ARS BALTICA in 1991. From then onwards, the festival has been developing musical newcomers from the regional scene of Schleswig-Holstein to young talents from Scandinavia and the Baltic States who, with their performance have been able to make an important step forward into their musical career.

Every year, the JazzBaltica Ensemble meets as an artistic and identity-founding nucleus. In alternating cast, outstanding musicians mainly from the Baltic region thereby work on a special programme for the upcoming JazzBaltica festival.

Apart from that, JazzBaltica initiates unique projects and newly created musical formations which also go beyond national borders. Known American Jazz musicians such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Dianne Reeves, Ornette Coleman, Lizz Wright oder Joe Lovano as well as their European counterparts
Wolfgang Haffner, Nils Landgren, Paolo Fresu, Cæcilie Norby, Lars Danielsson, Viktoria Tolstoy, Ulf Wakenius, Tomasz Stanko and the Esbjörn Svensson Trio are only few artists who met for a weekend of Jazz music at its best.

In addition to the open-air festival in the countryside, there are legendary jam sessions at Salzau Manor, often taking place until the early hours of the next morning.
  • Next edition of the project

JazzBaltica is still alive! From next year, the international jazz festival will be held at a new location and will stand under new artistic direction. The Swedish trombonist, vocalist and composer Nils Landgren will take over the artistic planning and with the terrain of the Evers-Werft in the port area of Timmendorfer Strand-Niendorf (Schleswig-Holstein/Northern Germany) there was also found a new home. The next edition will be taking place from 29 June to 1 July 2012.

Projects

"ARS BALTICA is not a bureaucratic construction for political posturing, but a concept that stands for unconventional and committed collaboration in real cooperative projects." (Rainer Haarmann, former ARS BALTICA Coordinator, 1997)
