THESPIS
Every second year, the international monodrama festival THESPIS (Kiel/ northern Germany) presents a programme of contemporary "one-man-shows", workshops, lectures, symposiums and public discussions. The festival is an international meeting point for monodrama professionals.
- What is the idea of the project?
The THESPIS Monodrama Festival has been founded in 1999 by the MEACENAS association as a curated biennial competition of the most interesting contemporary “one-man-shows” from all over the world and to present them to the public. The three best performances of the festival are chosen by an international jury and awarded with prizes.
More than 100 performers from all over the world have participated in the first seven editions of the festival and have given to the audience unique insights into the theatre traditions of the varied countries and cultures. To intensify their networking and cooperation is one of declared aims of the festival.
THESPIS is the unique monodrama-festival in Germany. It has become a springboard for the international career of quite a few solo-performers. Though it’s a small festival THESPIS has conquered its fixed position on the agenda of the most important international theatre festivals. - Who is the target group?
THESPIS is dedicated both to professionals from the field of monodrama and to the public interested in this kind of performance.
The festival’s participants are about 15 performers (and theirs staffs) per each edition of the festival. At the same time, there are about 1300 to 1800 visitors (depending on various capacities of the locations). - Next edition of the project THESPIS will take place for the next time in autumn 2012.
- Project partners Institutions involved in the project are MAECENAS e.V. (organizer), ITI-UNESCO, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media upon a Decision of the German Bundestag, the Ministry for Education and Culture of Land Schleswig-Holstein, the magistrate of the city of Kiel, the embassies of the home-countries of the invited performers, international cultural associations and local resp. regional organizers of cultural events.

Welcome to the Monodrama Festival THESPIS 2010!
This ARS BALTICA festival is the only one of its kind in Germany. In 2010, it takes place between 9 and 14 November at various venues in Kiel/ northern Germany.
