Artica Svalbard / OCA: Artist Residency in the Arctic 2026 | Deadline 23 May 2025

A unique residency opportunity for visual and performance-based artists to explore the challenges of the Arctic over 6 to 12 weeks in 2026 in Longyearbyen, Svalbard.

Artica Svalbard, one of Norway’s leading arts and culture organisations, in collaboration with the Office for Contemporary Art Norway (OCA), is offering an artist residency of 6 to 12 weeks in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, the world’s northernmost town with a permanent population for 2026. The residency supports artistic, cultural, and interdisciplinary exploration of the Arctic, offering time and space for research, reflection, and public dialogue, fostering meaningful community engagement and long-term impact beyond the Arctic context.

Who can Apply?
Visual and performance-based artists interested in engaging with global perspectives and critical issues connecting to the Artic (climate change, geopolitics, migration, and minority perspectives) are invited to apply. Artists working in research-based, conceptual, and socially engaged practices are especially addressed. Residents are encouraged to engage with the local community through at least one public activity and dialogue with public engagement being a core value of the programme.

What is Offered?

  • Fully covered travel expenses
  • Accommodation (fully furnished private apartment)
  • A stipend to cover living costs during the residency
  • Curatorial and practical support from OCA and Artica Svalbard

Take the chance to explore some of the world’s most pressing matters in this unique remote environment. Are you up for the challenge?
