Edvard Munch Museum

The MUNCH museum is the world's number one destination for experiencing Edvard Munch's life and art; now it opens in Bjørvika (Norway), with a view of the fjord and the city. The new museum will offer art and culture on 13 floors, and 11 gallery spaces.

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter and printmaker. In addition to more than 1700 paintings, he made numerous graphics and drawings. Munch is considered to be a pioneer for the expressionist direction in modern painting. In the MUNCH musuem the audience will get closer to more of Munch's art than ever before. Munch found most of his motives in the Oslo region, where he lived and painted throughout his life. His collection, left to the city of Oslo by the artist himself, consists of paintings, graphical prints and drawings. It is the largest collection of art by one single artist. In addition to regular exhibitions, the museum's events programme will be filled with music, performances, film screenings and art talks.

The visitors can also visit the places where important events and phases of artist's life took place and those which served Munch as a template for his panitings. For example Kragerø which inspired him to paint the famous, monumental work ‘The Sun’. Munch’s years in Kragerø (1909–1915) form a period of his career that for him was one of the most intense.

The route, which is also shaped like an M in the map, is called the Munch route. It will take the visitor to where the artist's family came from, and to the places Munch valued most. More information about the museum and the exhibition can be found here.
