Funding for Media Arts Projects in Outdoor Spaces | 20 September 2024

Media professionals and artists from all over the world should keep an eye on this funding opportunity for collaborative, innovative and interdisciplinary media art or international exchange projects responding to current cultural and social issues.

With a maximum of EUR 40.000 per project the UNESCO City of Media Art Karlsruhe sponsors the production and presentation of works to showcase at the 'Media art is here' exhibition in Summer 2025. Projects should be designed for urban outdoor spaces in Karlsruhe, bearing high public visibility and sustainability in mind, spreading not only the celebration of the multifarious media art discipline, but also the awareness of the tackled issue.

Karlsruhe has been declared UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts in 2019, making it the only German title recipient. Media art is defined by the UNESCO guidelines as any form of artistic expression created or presented with the help of technological media or tools. The media art fund of Karlsruhe opens the gates of application in the fifth annual edition and allows participation of both local and international artists or collectives for the first time. Therefore the city especially welcomes those applications focusing on connections to other UNESCO Creative Cities.

An application contains an artist biography, a short project outline accompanied by a visual draft and a calculation of the financial expenditure, from which emanates that the project can’t be realised solely through own and third-party funds. After the independent expert jury announces the distribution of the total funding sum of EUR 100.000 among the applicants, the grantees should begin working on their idea in 2024 and finish in the span of one year. This way, the results can be exhibited during the next iteration of the annual Media art is here event in Karlsruhe. This year’s exhibition will be open until September 15th and aligns with the mission of the UNESCO Creative City to indulge in the diverse expressions of media art.
