Homo Novus Festival

This year’s international festival of contemporary theatre “Homo Novus” focus on collaboration and giving space to other artists. The festival takes place between 2 and 11 September in Riga and several regions of Latvia.

The Shakedown, a collaboration project between The New Theater Institute of Latvia and “Rosendal Teater” in Trondheim, invites 5 Latvian and 5 Norwegian teens to curate the final weekend of the festival. The young curators want to explore the topic of nostalgia and questions such as: why we experience nostalgia? Where does reality end and memory begin? And what can we learn about ourselves while searching for these answers?

Schwankhalle Bremena performance and production venue with focus on the independent performing arts, will travel to Riga presenting eight 1-on-1 works as a first in a series of exchanges. The organisers will also generate a cultural connections between ANTI – Contemporary Art Festival in Kuopio, Finland. ANTI is an international contemporary art festival held annually in September. At ANTI Festival, new forms of art, the urban culture, and reaching a variety of audiences meet educational and research-based perspectives.

Two of the most significant festivals in Latvia will join forces in celebration and to create one unforgettable night of performance, art, and music: The Night Must be Caught on 3 September during White Night in Riga’s Old Town. 2022 is the second year in which Homo Novus festival includes accessibility for people with different types of disabilities - visual, hearing and movement disabilities. The organisers want to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to experience contemporary theatre.

Homo Novus is determined to provide contemporary performance encounters for everyone, regardless of access requirements. This year the works were designed for deaf and hard of hearing audiences, text based works for persons with vision impairment, and a phone call that can be accessed wherever user can get phone reception.
