hungry eyes festival

hungry eyes festival is a festival at the intersection of film, performance art and installation art in Gießen, Germany. This year's festival begins on Friday and takes place until 28 August.

Together with artists from all over the world and the audience the festival is investigating how film can be watched outside of a movie theatre and how also other artistic disciplines can think in cinematic ways. The opportunity to see and reflect on art together with others is an essential part of hungry eyes. It enables its visitors to have both individual and collective viewing experiences, to relate these to each other, and to actively perceive themselves as recipients. An important part of the program is also the discussions and exchange formats between the audience and artists.

hungry eyes emerged in 2017 from the film festival Filmsommer and have since sharpened its profile as an interdisciplinary festival that questions film and cinematic work not only on the screen, but also in performative and installation contexts. By changing the venues within the city of Giessen, each issue has a different focus in this examination. Originally founded by a small group of students of Applied Theater Studies, its passion was and still is film as a medium in all its facets.

One of the shown short films is "Why the birds?" by Tomas de Souza, the film is made with images gathered by cellphones across the world about a soft obsession, birds. Always around us, we often overlook them. But sometimes a breach between us may appear.
