Open Call Art & Design Residency

The "Museum am Rothenbaum. Kulturen und Künste der Welt" (MARKK) in Hamburg, Germany is looking for an promising artist, (social) designer, architect or environmental activist for a three-months residency at the MARKK.

The residency is supposed to take place from September to November 2021 and is a part of the European Union’s project "TAKING CARE - Ethnographic and World Cultures Museums as Spaces of Care".

The selected applicant will be able to work on their project in a work place within the museum. Moreover, the project should engage in the topic of water-related climate change inspired by the materials, technologies and/or ecological knowledge in the museum's collections. MARKK list a list of possible themes like water distribution, water pollution and purification, overfishing or water as a life-giving fluid but the list is not limited and the artist can create an own theme.

The project created during the residency will be part of the exhibition under the heading "Design Sustainable Futures", which will open as part of the Taking Care project in March 2022. The artists will present the project in form of an artist talk, conversation or performance as well. In addition, the residency will be documented in the MARKK website and the Taking Care project website.

For taking part in the residency the artist will be awarded with a fee of 4,000€ for travel costs and subsistence as well as an honorarium including material and production costs of 11,000€. The application deadline is 30 July 2021, more information can be found here.

The MARKK promotes the appreciation for and knowledge of the cultures and arts of the world. Through exhibitions, events and research, it provides spaces for cultural encounters and critical reflection.

TAKING CARE is a large-scale European cooperation project led by the Weltmuseum Wien; scheduled to run for four years, it brings together fourteen partner organisations and is co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, which has contributed two million euro.
