Open Call COAL 2021 PRIZE

The COAL Prize 2021, dedicated to the crucial issue of forests at center of the climate crisis and ecological transition, invites artists from all over the world to mobilize themselves to get involved alongside nature conservation actors.

Forests alone are home to 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity. As regulators of the climate, they contribute to the production of oxygen and constitute the second carbon emitter after the oceans. They regulate the flow of rivers and the rise in sea level, maintain soil fertility, protect coasts from extreme climatic events or even create migratory corridors for animal and plant species.

To preserve the forests of the world the COAL Prize wants the artists to feel and experience the ecological balances of forests, to promote the diversity of beings and cultures that inhabit them, to revive their ancestral knowledge and give birth to new ones, to nurture the movements of resilience they inspire, act with their protectors and invent other ways of being together in the woods. This will be done through projects that can be proposed until 1 March 2021.

Ten projects will be nominated by a jury, one of the ten will receive the COAL Prize as well 10.000 EUR both for the implementation of the project. The winning project will be realized within a residency run by the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature at the Domaine de Belval, property of the François Sommer Foundation.

Created in 2010 by the COAL association, the COAL Prize is a vector for identifying, promoting and disseminating artists who, throughout the world, testify, imagine and experiment with solutions for transforming territories, lifestyles, organizations, and modes of production.
