Open Call Literary Residency

The City Culture Institute is looking for translators from Poland, authors from Belarus and Ukraine, and cultural researchers for a literary residency programme based in Gdańsk. The residency will support four persons with a four-week stay in the city.

The Open Call is addressed to authors from Belarus and Ukraine who have published at least one book or poetry volume, are currently working on a literary project and are able to communicate in Polish, English or Russian. It is also open to translators from a foreign language into Polish who have produced at least one translation that was published or staged in a theatre and are currently working on a translation project. The organisers specifically encourage applications from translators working with dramas.

The organisers are also looking within the liberal arts residency for a cultural researcher who would like to devote the coming months, or perhaps years, of their life to discovering the story of Maria Janion’s life and work, focused on her intellectual ruminations and fascinations and an attempt at uncovering her private life that had been hidden away from prying eyes.

An apartment, expert and logistics support, and a monthly fee of up to PLN 3000 gross will be offered to selected applicants. The guests will also take part in City Culture Institute’s literary activities. Residencies in Gdańsk are an opportunity to spend a few weeks in the city on creative work and get to know the local art scene.

Deadline for submitting applications is 17 July. More information can be found here.

The programme is organised in cooperation with Kraków (Kraków Festival Office), Warsaw (Staromiejski Dom Kultury), the Literary Union and the Polish Literary Translators Association.
