Open Call NEW NOW

The Festival for Digital Arts NEW NOW is looking for trailblazing creatives who deal with the relationship between humans, nature and technology for the next festival edition in June - August 2023.

NEW NOW is the Festival for Digital Arts at Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage in Essen, Germany. Returning in 2023 for its second edition, the festival will take place between 1 June and 6 August under the title Hypernatural Forces, focusing on the forces that drive and design nature and the digital. The festival venue — the Zollverein coal mine industrial complex — invites the participants to take a closer look at energy production in recent history. As the largest coal mine in the world at the time, Zollverein colliery was a driving force for modernity and the exploitation of the environment. NEW NOW explores the change from industrialisation to digitalisation through an artistic lens and asks: In the face of ecological crisis, what new forces are we dealing with today?

It is possible to apply with talks, panels, workshops and performances as well as off-stage projects such as audio walks or prototypes, as a venue or creative professionals in the Ruhr region, or with a digital contribution. Ideas that do not yet have a location will be supported in finding one. Applicants are invited to join in designing the opening weekend, the conference and ThinkHalle, or the virtual festival. Spaces and initiatives in the region are also invited to become part of NEW NOW as a Satellite with their own programme items. The organisers are especially welcome applications from the Ruhr region, but also nationwide and international projects.

Applications can be submitted until 15 February. Find more information here.
