Open Call Playwrights

On May 9th, 2024, the 'Ministry for Family, Women, Culture and Integration of Rhineland-Palatine' in Germany will bestow the Carl Zuckmayer-Scholarship for the first time, endowed with 10.000 EUR. It is designed for the recipient to craft a cosmopolitan play, supported by the Staatstheater Mainz, with the option to premiere it at this esteemed venue.

CARL ZUCKMAYER-SCHOLARSHIP FOR SOCIOCRITICAL EUROPEAN PLAYWRIGHTS (GER)

The scholarship is directed towards individuals who have authored at least one staged play. Thus, it preserves Zuckmayer’s legacy and makes the performing arts scene flourish.

Zuckmayer lived from 1896 to 1977 and faced exile in the United States due to his opposing views towards German fascism in World War II. The scholarship requires the winner to create a play on contemporary sociological issues in Europe, linked to Zuckmayer’s areas of inspiration like homeland or resistance. It is to be performed at the 2025 PLUG&PLAY festival in Mainz, Germany. Offering broad exchange opportunities for young directors, the festival also serves as a forum for the five-member jury to decree their choice among the applicants.
