Open Call Relevance of Artworks

The Finnish organisation Platform want to reflect on the artist’s role, the practice of the artist and the relevance of art work/art works. The organisers are offering residenies to work with place-specific projects in the small town Vaasa.

The organisers of Platform usually work with an annual theme that we also encourage our guest artists to examine. For the years 2023/24 they want to try something different. Instead of giving the applicants a theme to respond to they would like to ask a question and reflect on the artist’s role, the practice of the artist and the relevance of art work/art works. What is the relevance of the work and artworks and how does the practice relate to the Platform residency question?

Platform offers for selected artists accommodation, travel expenses and a working grant (approx. 300 € per week). There is also the possibility to get a small production budget of 1000 €. The apartment is located near the city center in Vaasa. The artists are asked to realize a project, which can be presented either during the residency or at a later stage and are expected to give a public talk, performance or workshop about his/her/their work or an introduction to themselves at the beginning of the residency. The artists are required to submit documentation of the produced project to Platform, as well as press release / information text / informal report or equivalent.

Applications can be submitted until 10 July. More information can be found here.

Platform is an artist-run initiative founded in the year of 2000. The initiative runs an art space and a residency to offer live experiences of different perspectives in a location where this would otherwise be limited. The events have periodically been based on different themes that serves as a base for discussions as well as the content for the activities. Platform has dealt with themes such as Local-Global, questioning the role of contemporary art in the periphery; Place and Identity, investigating connections between site and personality; Creative Community, focused on urban development and creativity.
