The German society is very diverse but graphic design still fails to reflect this reality. To change that the organisation Represent Network was founded. It aims to heighten the visibility of works from BPOC and (post)migrant visual communicators living and working in Germany to facilitate connecting and establishing networks and provide representation and role models for young creatives.
Represent Network works with its website, an Instagram channel @represent.network and events. The first Represent Network event took a look at diversity and visibility at the art academies in Germany. It took place in February, the planning for more events is on the way.
The Represent Network aims to represent different perspectives in order to avoid reproducing stereotypes only addressing the white majority. The website you can find shows different German based artists from the following areas: illustration, typographie, webdesign, graphic design, art direction, animation, 3d artist and graphic art.
The network was initiated by Jasmina Begović as part of her diploma project in communication design at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design in 2021. She is of the opinion that designers shape the space around everybody and are therefore responsible for the messages and images that inform and influence society.
